Charles Fort
At Summercove, short distance outside the town, is a classic example of a star-shaped fort constructed in the late 17th century on the site of an earlier coastal fortification. The office of public works have been carrying out significant restoration work here for many years. It is open to visitors from mid March to the end of October.

Desmond Castle and Wine Museum
Built as a custom house by the Earl of Desmond c.AD 1500. Desmond Castle has had a colourful history, ranging from Spanish occupation in 1601 to use as a prison for captured American sailors during the American War of Independence. The Wine Museum which opened in Desmond Castle in 1997, documents the intriguing history of the 'Wine Geese' - the Irish families who became involved in the wine trade overseas. It is open to the public from mid-April to early October.
